Port Administration Holds Christening Ceremony for
New Tugboats

In a significant milestone for American Samoa’s maritime infrastructure, Governor Pulaali’i Nikolao Pula, accompanied by First Lady Lois Phillips-Pula, attended the Department of Port Administration’s (DPA) dedication ceremony for its two new tugboats, Tava’e and Toloa on Wednesday, May 28, 2025. The event took place at the main wharf and drew a large crowd, including members of the Fono, cabinet officials, Port Administration staff, and the general public.
DPA Director Barney Sene opened the ceremony with heartfelt remarks, thanking the American Samoa Government and port leadership for their tireless efforts and vision in securing these vital maritime assets. Director Sene paid special tribute to the late Chris King, former DPA Director, whose leadership and determination were instrumental in bringing the tugboats to fruition.
“Mr. King’s vision, passion, and love for our islands is the reason why we are here today,” said Director Sene. A touching tribute followed by an unveiling of a portrait of Mr. King, and a moment of silence was observed in his memory.

Governor Pulaali’i, delivering special remarks, expressed his deep pride and gratitude for the achievements, calling it a landmark occasion for the territory. “Today, we are not just dedicating vessels, we are honoring a legacy of perseverance, leadership, and devotion to the progress of our islands,” said the Governor. “These tugboats represent safety, strength, and service for the future of our port operations, and they stand as a testament to the vision of those who came before us.” Governor Pulaali’i concluded by congratulating DPA on their new assets and their services to the territory.

The ceremony reached a heartfelt highlight with the christening of the two tugboats. The Tava’e was christened by Mrs. Daniel King, wife to the late Mr. King, in a moving tribute to her late husband’s legacy. The Toloa was christened by First Lady Lois Phillips-Pula, adding a meaningful touch to the ceremony. Following the christening, the crews assigned to each tugboat were officially introduced and received by Governor Pulaali’i, who personally met with them to offer his congratulations and support.
Attendees were treated to a live demonstration as the Tava’e and Toloa performed a series of maneuvers, showcasing the vessels’ capabilities and the added safety and operational support they will bring to American Samoa’s port activities.
The dedication of these tugboats marks a new chapter in the territory’s maritimedevelopment-one guided by visionary leadership, steadfast commitment, and the shared purpose of serving and protecting the people of American Samoa.
